George YORKE. Labourer, Wedmore, was fined 5s and costs for allowi= ng his=20 horse to stray on the highway.
WELLS
Crosse Bros., Wells v. Robert MILLARD, Wedmore. Claim =A34 18s for= wine and=20 spirits. Defendant had paid =A38 into court and disputed the remainder, and= as=20 Messrs CROSSE were unable to prove the delivery =96 the carter having died = =96=20 judgement was given for the amount paid into court only.

At the county police court yesterday, before Major the hon. E.J. B= OYLE=20 and Mr. W.S. HODGKINSON, Richard Hembrey, a farmer of Weare, was summoned f= or=20 being the owner of a bull which was not under proper control on March=20 23rd. It appeared that the bull was under care and the case was= =20 dismissed.

At the fortnightly meeting of the Board of Guardians yesterday, Mr= E,H,=20 LLEWELLYN, presiding, the return showed 114 inmates in the Workhouse, again= st=20 105 at the corresponding date last year. Eliza TINCKNELL was summoned by Jane HEAL , of Cocklake, Wedmore, = for=20 using threatening language towards her. Mr. BRICE defended, and asked that = the=20 above and a summons in which John POPLE was summoned for assaulting Eliza= =20 TINCKNELL might be heard together, = The=20 magistrates coincided. In the first case HEAL said TINCKNELL used very viol= ent=20 language towards her without the least provocation; in the second case it w= as=20 stated that whilst TINCKNELL was going to her home on September 15th= SUP>,=20 on passing HEAL’s residence, someone threw something out of the windo= w at her.=20 On her turning around to see who it was, HEAL and POPLE, who lodges with he= r=20 came out, the latter subsequently following her and assaulting her with his= =20 crutch, striking her across the arm and abdomen with it, whereby she had be= en=20 obliged to place herself under medical care. The defence was that no blow w= as=20 struck, but that TINCKNELL injured herself by falling over a scarper. The b= ench=20 dismissed the summons against TINCKNELL, and fined POPLE 40s and costs,=20 designating his conduct as most cowardly,
Seventeen summonses were issued against parents for non-compliance= with=20 the requirements of the Elementary Education Act. The several offences were= =20 proved by Mr ELLIOTT, school attendance officer, and fines varying from 1s = to 5s=20 were imposed.

John BISHOP, a youth, was ordered to find sureties to keep the pea= ce, he=20 having been guilty of disorderly conduct at Mark while the congregation wer= e=20 leaving the parish church, whereby they were annoyed and=20 inconvenienced.
Robert MILKINS was summoned for assaulting J. WEBBER at Wedmore, o= n July=20 23rd, and breaking his leg; a cross-summons charged WEBBER with= =20 assaulting MILKINS at the same time and place. WEBBER’s version of th= is affair=20 was that on the evening of the day in question – Wedmore fair day- so= me one=20 struck him with a stick, and on his knocking the offender down, several oth= ers,=20 including MILKINS, “set” on him, and in the row his leg sustain= ed a compound=20 fracture. P.C. GIBSON proved pulling MILKINS off WEBBER, who was on the gro= und,=20 whilst holding him he (MILKINS) deliberately kicked WEBBER several times, o= n=20 which the latter exclaimed that his leg was broken. The defence was that WE= BBER=20 had challenged several men to fight, that he had knocked down several by wa= y of=20 amusement, but on his assaulting MILKINS he (MILKINS) returned the blow, bu= t he=20 denied having kicked WEBBER. The bench fined WEBBER as the originator of th= e row=20 5s., and costs, and, as a mark of their disgust at the cowardly conduct of= =20 MILKINS, fined him 20s, and costs.
