Hello Mel

I've had a good look through the books, and have found you three =
Phippens and a Larder, but that's all there was I'm afraid. I found the =
last extract the most interesting:

Licence to Thomas Phippen of Bawdripp, a very poor man, to inhabit a =
cottage newly erected by himself with the leave of the lord of the =
manor, without four acres of land being thereto laid.

General Sessions of the Peace held at Ivelchester 1614
=20

Whereas a certificate has been presented by the Mayor, Aldermen, =
Constables and Overseers of the Borough of Axbridge that there are three =
ancient Inns within the said Borough, and that the innkeepers are =
greatly impoverished by reason that Edward Gallwey, John Colston, Robert =
Larder, and Peter Butcher, who inhabit in the next street adjoining to =
the Burrough, but outside the liberties have built stables there and on =
every market day and at other fetch the horses of travelers forth of the =
Burrough and place them in their stables and take money for their =
standing and meat; and that the said Edward Gallwey and John Robinson, =
John Robinson and William Norcott do keep disorderly tippling-houses in =
west street to the great prejudice of the ancient inns; Examination of =
this cause is referred to John Maye and Joseph Rattle Esquires, who =
shall call before them the said parties and order and determine the =
same; and if any shall refuse to be ordered, they shall be bound over to =
the next General Sessions.

General Sessions of the Peace Wells 1615
=20

The information of Hercules Phippen of Berrington (Burrington) given on =
oath to William Cole 3rd Dec. 1657; that Edith wife of William Mitchell =
of Berrington came into the chapel there on 29th November and disturbed =
Mr. Alflatt the minister by speaking words of which he only heard =
"deceiving the people." Whereupon the informant took her out of the =
chapel.

Joseph Phippen heard the said Edith say "The day of the Lord is at =
hand," and she wished the minister to repent, with many other words he =
knoweth not. Mr. Alflatt did give off and did not pray after his =
preaching, which he usually doth.

General Sessions 1657

Cheers!

Sue
